How to Become a Member of Faith Presbyterian Church

We earnestly desire for you to consider joining Faith Presbyterian Church.  Generally, we ask each person that wishes to become a member of Faith or those who want to explore a membership relationship to attend what we call the Inquirer’s Class.   Everyone is invited to attend this class.  While we desire to have the class members become members of Faith, after attending the class, there is no requirement for individuals to do so.  If you want to see more information on the content of the Inquirer’s Class, click on the “Inquirer’s Class Choices,” which is located on the Main Menu.

In addition to attending the Inquirer’s Class, there are several other things that are required to become a member of Faith Presbyterian Church.

First, you must have been Baptized in the Christian Church.  Since Presbyterians believe that Baptism is important, we recognize any Christian Baptism.  If you have not been Baptized, we can arrange for this to take place prior to joining the church.

Second, there are three ways to be accepted as members:

Ø     Affirmation of Faith.  Individuals who join this way are doing so because they are declaring their faith for the first time.  Some of the individuals who join this way have not been Baptized.  No problem!  After meeting with the Pastor, we can arrange a Baptism.  Some of the individuals who join this way have not been a member of any Christian church.  Again, this is no problem!  Faith has a number of adult Sunday School and other programs that every individuals may want to attend to gain a better understanding of Christianity and to develop their faith.

Ø     Reaffirmation of faith.  Individuals who have been members of a church but their membership has become inactive may join in this manner.

Ø    Transfer of Membership.  Individuals who have an active membership in a Christian church join in this manner.  We will ask the individuals to give us the church name so that we can send a letter to their former church.  This allows the former church to remove the individual from their rolls.

Third, each person that becomes a member must meet with the Session (the board of Elders that are part of our church government).  At that meeting, the Elders will introduce themselves and ask each person to summarize their faith journey.

Fourth, regardless of the way that anyone is accepted into membership, all members must make the same public affirmation of their faith.  On a day appointed for receiving new members, each person will be recognized during a worship service.   Each individual that joins Faith Presbyterian Church will also be asked to affirm their faith before the congregation by taking the following vows:

ü     I declare my faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior;

ü     I renounce evil and affirm my reliance on God’s grace; and

ü     I declare my intention to participate actively and responsibly in the life of the church.

If you have any questions about becoming a member, you can contact the Pastor or Evangelism and Outreach Elders.  Click here to link to the e-mail for the Pastor and obtain other contact information.
